Abstract

The topic of cardiac microbiology encompasses all diseases in which microorganisms colonize the heart, pericardium, or great vessels, with production of systemic symptoms or complications. Resultant myocarditis, pericarditis, aortitis, or endocarditis may occur. Endocarditis will be discussed separately in another portion of this e-book. The colonization of cardiopulmonary circuit temperature regulators with Mycobacterium chimera is also explored. A comprehensive discussion of each topic includes diagnosis and initial management, indication for and description of operation, and patient outcomes.
