Blunt Thoracic Aortic Injury

Abstract

Acute traumatic aortic transection, otherwise known as blunt thoracic aortic injury (BTAI), is a leading cause of death in blunt force trauma. The treatment of this pathology has evolved significantly over the past 2 decades with the proliferation of endovascular interventions as well as medical management. What follows is a discussion of BTAI with regard to presentation, diagnosis, treatment algorithms, and surveillance.
